EVDOL 33 - Joseph Haydn and the Development of the Classical Symphony

This course explores the pivotal role of Joseph Haydn in the development of the Classical symphony orchestra. Acknowledged as a foundational figure, Haydn’s contributions to orchestration, thematic development, and structural innovation have left an indelible mark on the music world, influencing his contemporaries and future generations alike, including Mozart and Beethoven.

Through detailed analysis of select symphonies, the course will examine Haydn’s innovative techniques in motif manipulation and form, demonstrating how these elements evolved into the core principles of Classical music. Participants will gain insights into the orchestral advancements during this era, understanding how Haydn’s work shaped the compositions of Mozart and Beethoven and set new standards for symphonic writing.

Structured with a combination of lectures, listening sessions, and discussions, the course offers students a comprehensive understanding of the orchestral landscape of the Classical period and the enduring influence of Haydn’s artistic legacy.
