EVDIV 13 - Jazz Theory & Analysis I Sean Smither Just as an understanding of a foreign language’s alphabet, lexicon, and grammar help facilitate the ability to speak and write it, the study of jazz theory helps to facilitate the ability to improvise, compose, and arrange in jazz styles. This course introduces an understanding of melodic structure, rhythmic grooves, and harmony as written and performed in jazz. After a review of music theory fundamentals and notation basics, students will learn principles of harmonic structure, study aspects of rhythmic and metric structure, and develop skills for analyzing jazz compositions and improvisations. This course is recommended but not required for students interested in jazz piano. Applicants should be able to read, identify, and write notes in both treble and bass clefs.
