EVCRT 423 - Music Theory Elective: Advanced Analysis for Performers and Composers Jordyn Carmen Analysis, in order to be useful, needs to serve some sort of purpose. For many standard analytical methods, this purpose is to strengthen our understanding in the language of the classical canon. However, in the 20th and 21st centuries, new methods of analysis were (and still are) developing with the intention of informing performance and composition. This course will explore several of these methods (such as narrative analysis, Schenkerian analysis, contrapuntal analysis, etc.) and apply them to the repertoire. Performers will learn how we can employ theory to inform a more genuine and authentic performance, and composers will learn how these methods can be used to further develop their craft.
This course is intended for students who have completed at least Theory IV.
