THMUS 543E — The Symphonies of Brahms3 credits Spring Behzad Ranjbaran
Prerequisite: THMUS 511 . This rigorous course takes as subject matter the symphonies of Brahms, widely considered seminal works in the genre. Course content explores numerous aspects of Brahms’ symphonies, from harmony, melody, form, texture, and rhythm to the cultural, political, and economic context in which these works were created. Particular focus will be brought to Brahms’ many influences, including the impact of Beethoven’s symphonies, and how Brahms assimilated musical elements from Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, and Romantic periods to create a personal musical language.
