THMUS 529E — Schoenberg and Stravinsky3 credits Spring Michelle DiBucci
Prerequisite: THMUS 511 . This course dives into the music of Schoenberg and Stravinsky, arguably the two most influential composers of the 20th century. While their approaches to composition seem radically different, both composers focused on what might be viewed as the essence of music: the interval and counterpoint. Furthermore, their polemical reaction to post-Wagnerian trends helped shape new ways of thinking about style and substance. Seminal works from each period of the composer’s output will be discussed including, Verklärte Nacht, Pierrot Lunaire and Wind Quintet by Schoenberg and Firebird, Symphony of Psalms and In Memoriam Dylan Thomas by Stravinsky.
