MSMUS 533-534 — Advanced Orchestration

Offered in alternate years. An advanced course about orchestral sound and texture, featuring detailed treatment of practical issues such as voicing, doubling, and contrast. Students analyze recent solo, chamber, and orchestral works, with an emphasis on new approaches to instrumentation and orchestration. Written exercises are read in class by various large ensembles and orchestra. Required of all graduate Composition majors.
