EVDOL 37 - Political Pianist Catherine Kautsky Classical music seems far removed from the seat of command in today’s America, but, historically, composers were a symbol of power in many countries. Their music was seen not as an international language but rather as a force for nationalism and political triumph. Alternatively, composers who felt alienated from a regime expressed their outrage through musical protest. This course will center on works for the piano that either lent themselves to outside political interpretation or made intentionally political statements. The focus will be on Europe, with an emphasis on Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, and Debussy, but music from the Soviet Union, China, and the United States will also be addressed. Performances by the instructor will be folded into class sessions.
