EVDOL 27 - From Chant to Bach Brad Balliett, Doug Balliett Tracing the development of Western music from its origins in chant to polyphony and madrigals and through to the age of thorough bass and the development of Baroque style, this course offers a survey of pre-Bach music, investigating how music developed from a single line to incredibly complex pieces for large ensembles. Through comparative, close listening to various ensembles, students will be invited to investigate questions of style and interpretation. In addition to chant, students will study and listen to work by composers composers including Josquin, Gesualdo, Monteverdi, Palestrina, Bach, and more.
