EVDOL 35 - Stravinsky and the Dance

Faye-Ellen Silverman
Stravinsky’s career was established with his ballet Firebird, commissioned by Diaghilev for the Ballets Russes. Toward the end of Stravinsky’s long association with the Ballets Russes, he collaborated with a young choreographer, George Balanchine, on Apollo. Stravinsky enjoyed a multidecade relationship with Balanchine, a kindred spirit. Stravinsky’s music has been used in more than 30 works of New York City Ballet’s repertory, including some commissioned by that ballet company. These works continue to be performed by ballet companies across the globe, from San Francisco to Moscow. This course will look at several dance works spanning different parts of Stravinsky’s career, including Petrushka, Pulcinella, Les Noces, Orpheus, and Agon.
