The world of Stephen Sondheim is endlessly rich; this course will take a microscope to Sondheim the craftsman, one song at a time. One of Sondheim’s favorite maxims was “God is in the Details,” and it is in the details that his unique fusion of storytelling and musical ingenuity can be best understood. Proceeding one song at a time, the course will examine Sondheim’s relationship to the great tradition of American songwriting, as well as his profound links to classical music and opera, tracing his unparalleled ability to elucidate character and motivation through song forms. Students will be welcome to request their favorite Sondheim songs for analysis and discussion.
