EVDIV 517 - Scoring to Picture (Non-Credit)

Richard Baitz
This course introduces students to the fundamental skills for composing and producing music for visual media. Students examine the world of film music from a variety of viewpoints, from the dramatic and psychological to the stylistic and structural. Topics include spotting to picture, creating a musical composition based on image and story, and how to set up a scoring project in your Digital Audio Workstation. Over the course of the semester students compose cues to a diverse spectrum of media, from web episodes to short narrative, documentary, and feature film. The final project involves scoring and recording the music to a longer-form excerpt, with the participation of one or more live players. Prerequisites: a basic knowledge of music technology and music production software such as Logic Studio or other similar “DAW”s.

This course offers both credit and non-credit options, allowing students to choose their preferred mode of participation. Placement in this course grants students the flexibility to register for either the credit or non-credit sections. Those enrolled in the credit section will have their assignments evaluated and receive letter grades throughout the semester, culminating in a final grade. Furthermore, students enrolled for credit and receive a passing grade will be awarded Juilliard Extension credits, which will be duly recorded on their official and unofficial transcripts.

Conversely, students who choose to take Scoring to Picture without seeking credit will not be assigned letter grades. While their enrollment and course completion will be acknowledged on their academic record, the official and unofficial transcripts will not list this course.
