EVDIV 331 - Art Song and Operatic Performance for the Advanced Singer

Donna Gill
This dynamic course is tailored for highly skilled singers seeking to further their expertise in the realm of operatic and art song performance. With optional exploration of musical theatre and operetta literature, this course offers a diverse repertoire selection encompassing various languages, periods, and styles. Singers are encouraged to actively engage in the repertoire selection process, allowing their individual tastes and abilities to shape their learning journey. Moreover, participants are invited to conduct independent research on the works they present, fostering a deeper understanding and connection to the music.

Classes adopt an open coaching session format, resembling an interactive masterclass, where constructive commentary from both peers and instructors is encouraged. The focus of the course encompasses precise rhythmic accuracy, mastery of melodic structure, and attention to interpretive nuances, including phrasing and vocal line shaping. Linguistic skills are also honed through diction refinement and translation techniques, emphasizing the use of language to enhance clarity of expression and convey emotional depth.

While ample opportunities for solo repertoire study are provided, a key element of the course involves engaging in scene work. Collaborative ensemble pieces, such as duets, trios, and quartets, are meticulously prepared based on the unique voices within the class. Scenes are coached from both musical and dramatic perspectives, delving into plot analysis, character development, and motivation. This comprehensive approach allows singers to grasp the intricacies of performance beyond individual songs.

The semester concludes with a recital, showcasing the culmination of the singers’ work through both solo performances and ensemble pieces. This final event provides an exceptional platform for participants to demonstrate their growth and talent cultivated throughout the course.
