HIMUS 624 — History of Early Music

This course surveys the history of the early music movement from its 19^th-century, antiquarian roots to its present position within the field of classical music. Together we will address some of the questions relevant to present-day performers of Baroque music. How have attitudes to historically informed performance changed in that time? What are the advantages and disadvantages of various editorial methods? What is the relationship between original notation and modern performance? Readings will be drawn from Dolmetsch, Landowska, Harnoncourt, Taruskin, Cyr, Butt, Kuijken, Haynes, and Burgess. Students will create an annotated bibliography on a particular question of performance practice.
