THMUS 528E — The Art Song: From Schubert to Rorem

. Beginning with the masters of German Lieder (e.g. Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, and Wolf), and continuing through the present, we will examine the evolution of the song as an art form through German Lieder, French Mélodies and the English and American art songs. Special emphasis will be given to the relationship between text and music, cultural influences, interpretation, and style. The curriculum will include analysis, comparative analyses of settings of the same text by different composers, student presentations, listening and reflection reports, and a short composition of a song for voice and piano. Guest art song composers will join our class on two occasions to discuss their work.
