Berg’s operas stand as a pinnacle of operatic conception, design, and originality in the 20th century. This course will analyze these two masterworks in detail, revealing both surface and hidden structures as well as their unique concept and design from a compositional viewpoint. Class discussions will center on opera at fin de siècle and on earlier vocal works of Berg and his contemporaries to illuminate how Berg prepared himself for the task of composing his two operas.
