EVDOL 070 - Great Pianists: A Recorded History

Matthew Odell

Beginning with the invention of recording technology, pianists have created a documentary history that reveals individual playing styles as well as changes in interpretive style over time. What can be learned from listening to a composer play his own works? What might the playing of someone who worked with a composer tell us about what that composer preferred? This class will study some of the earliest known recordings, including ones by major composers (Brahms, Debussy, Ravel, Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev) and students of Brahms, Clara Schumann, and Chopin as well as other pianists from generations past. We will compare them with more recently made recordings to discover the sheer diversity of pianistic voices and to highlight some of the changes in interpretation over time. No prior experience necessary.
