EVDIV 040 - Elements of Keyboard Skills
This course introduces basic skills for keyboard proficiency and musicianship. Students gain fluency in playing all scales and arpeggios, which provide a basis for learning triads, seventh chords, inversions, cadences, and simple harmonic progressions. Additionally, students are given musical excerpts to sight-read and play at the keyboard in order to identify melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic patterns; to improve hand-eye coordination and comfort at the keyboard; and to explore voice-leading principles and harmonic usages in existing repertoire. The course closes with an introduction to figured bass realization and clef-reading. This is a yearlong course; students may enter in either semester. Placement interview required.
