EVDIV 041 - Introduction to Keyboard Skills

Mika Sasaki
This yearlong course continues instruction in figured bass at the keyboard and discusses analytical techniques for basic diatonic and chromatic harmonic progressions. Students sight-read and realize figured bass in a variety of musical styles, including contrapuntal works and 17th- and 18th-century keyboard and vocal genres (e.g., the sacred cantata), and practice the art of continuo playing. The course provides additional instruction in reading alto and tenor clefs, adding soprano clef and score reading in four parts (e.g., Bach chorales in open score). Solo keyboard exercises are supplemented with duets and practicing keyboard accompaniment. The course focuses on understanding harmony and voice leading in keyboard style, with the aim of achieving deeper understanding music and fluency in keyboard-style playing. Prerequisite: Elements of Keyboard Skills and Introduction to Ear Training or equivalent. Placement interview required.
