LARTS 384 — New York on Stage, on Screen, on the Page

3 credits
Fall
Roger Oliver

Prerequisite: LARTS 112  This course will explore the ways in which New York City has been portrayed in film from the early days of Hollywood to the present day. Using the book Celluloid Skyline: New York and the Movies by James Sanders as our basic text, we will examine such diverse films as Forty-Second Street, On the Town, The Godfather, Mean Streets, Manhattan, and Do the Right Thing, among others. In examining these films we will also discuss how they translate prose and plays about New York into the cinematic medium.
