Evening Division Fall 2019 [ARCHIVED CATALOG]

Policies, Procedures & Required Information

Student Handbook

All students must read and agree to abide by the policies and procedures outlined in the Evening Division Student Handbook. The handbook is available in hardcopy in the Evening Division Office and online at juilliard.edu/evening/studenthandbook.

Listed below are the various ways to register for Evening Division classes. We do not accept registration over the phone. Please be sure to include daytime and evening phone numbers on the registration forms in case a course is canceled, closed, or if there is a payment discrepancy. Juilliard is not responsible for forms that are lost via mail, fax, or electronic transit.

Students register for courses by filling out the registration form in Registration.

Registrations are processed on a first-come, first-served basis, whether submitted by mail, fax, online, or in person. Courses in Conducting, Piano, Voice, Musicianship, Keyboard Studies, Theory, and Composition require a placement audition or interview before registration.

Mail, fax, or in person

Students who submit by mail must fill out the registration forms completely and send the proper amount of payment by check, money order, or credit card (American Express, MasterCard, or Visa). Mail-in registrations should be postmarked 10 days prior to the first day of class.

Students who register by fax must pay by credit card (American Express, MasterCard, or Visa). Students who mail in their registration forms should not fax duplicate copies of the same form, as this could result in additional credit card charges. If faxing registration forms, students should call the Evening Division Office the following business day to confirm fax receipt. In the event that a credit card is declined due to insufficient funds or an improper account number, the registration will not be processed.

Students may visit the Evening Division Office during business hours (Monday – Thursday, 10 am – 6 pm; Friday, 9 am – 5 pm; closed on Fridays in the summer) to register in person. Students must complete a registration form and may pay by credit card, check, or money order.

Students may register online for certain courses by visiting the Evening Division section on the Juilliard website (juilliard.edu/evening) and clicking on “Browse the course catalog.”

Returning Students

Returning students who have a login and password who wish to register online should first sign in to WebAdvisor. Specific login instructions can be found here

Makeup Classes

Classes may be canceled due to severe weather or any other unforeseen event that may disrupt public transportation. These class cancellations will be announced on the Juilliard website home page and on the Evening Division voicemail system. Individual phone calls will not be made. Upon resumption of the normal schedule, instructors will advise their respective classes regarding a makeup schedule.

If a faculty member should cancel a class session due to an emergency or an illness, the Evening Division Office will try to contact the students of that class by phone or email. When the faculty member returns to class, he or she will schedule a makeup session with the students.

Withdrawals and Refunds

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete an Evening Division Withdrawal Request Form . Students may mail in, fax, email, or hand in their form. No telephone requests for withdrawals will be accepted. Ceasing to attend a class or notifying the instructor does not constitute an official withdrawal. Cancellation of payment does not constitute withdrawal or reduce the financial obligations to Juilliard. A $25 fee will be charged for returned and stop-payment checks.

Withdrawal from class does not necessarily entitle a student to a refund or to a cancellation of tuition still due. Refunds are processed within 10 days of receiving written notice. Refunds are computed from the day on which written notice of withdrawal is received and are issued as follows:

100% tuition refunded
for withdrawals submitted prior to the first day of class.

75% tuition refunded
for withdrawals submitted after the first week of class.

50% tuition refunded
for withdrawals submitted after the second week of class.

No refunds issued
for withdrawals after the third week of class.

Juilliard reserves the right to ask, at its discretion, a student to withdraw from a class if he or she causes a disruption to a class, to an instructor, or to a Juilliard staff member. Disruptive behavior may be grounds for the school to deny enrollment in subsequent Evening Division courses and/or access to the Juilliard building. Please see the Evening Division Student Handbook for the Code of Conduct and other school and divisional policies: juilliard.edu/evening/studenthandbook.

The following discounts are applicable for those registering by mail, fax, or in person. Students must ask for the following discounts by filling in the discount name on the proper line on the registration form. Please do not assume we have your discount information on record. Discounts are not given retroactively. No discounts are applied to short courses (6 weeks or fewer).

Please note: only one discount applies per person.

Senior Citizens (age 65 and older) receive a 10 percent discount on tuition for all courses except short courses. There is no discount for nonrefundable fees. Proof of age (such as a Medicare card, driver’s license, or passport) is required. Please do not send original documents with the mail-in registration.

Juilliard Ovation Society members at the $2,500 level or higher receive a 25 percent discount on all courses except short courses.

Many other discounts are available to Evening Division students at local, national, and online businesses including restaurants, hotels, performance venues, and electronics and clothing stores. Please contact the Evening Division office for a full list of discounts.

ID Cards and Security

All students require a Juilliard identification card for entrance into the school. A permanent photo ID card is issued to Evening Division students after they have registered and before the start of the semester. Students should keep their ID cards even if they are not currently enrolled. When students re-enroll, their ID card will be reactivated automatically. A $50 replacement fee will be charged for lost or stolen ID cards. Students may not use their ID cards to swipe guests into the building.

Evening Division students are allowed to bring one guest to one class one time per semester. Students should email evening@juilliard.edu with the following information about their guest at least 24 in advance:

  • First and last name of guest
  • Date and time of visit
  • Purpose of visit
  • Location of visit (Room #)
  • And any additional information for security (not required)

Guests are required to show identification at the public safety desk.

Practice Rooms

Practice room facilities are available to students enrolled in advanced piano and vocal performance classes only, for a nonrefundable fee of $125 per semester. Practice rooms are located on the fourth and fifth floors, and Evening Division students are restricted to practice during the following hours:

Monday – Friday 5 pm – 11 pm
Saturday 8:30 pm – 11 pm
Sunday 11 am – 11 pm

Practice rooms are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Students who are eligible and have elected and paid for practice room privileges will have access to the practice room reservation system. Please note, there is no guarantee that a room will be available at the hours listed above. Food, beverages, and smoking are not permitted in the practice rooms. Please visit juilliard.edu/practice-rooms for more information.

Library Usage

Students are welcome to study and read in the Lila Acheson Wallace Library (www.juilliard.edu/library), located on the fifth floor. You must be enrolled in a full-term course and pay the nonrefundable $40 library fee if you wish to check out books or scores and access JUILCAT Plus online. Borrowing privileges do not include CD recordings. Library access ends on the last day of the fall semester and on May 15 for the spring semester. Hours are as follows:

Monday – Thursday 8:30 am – 9 pm
Friday 8:30 am – 7 pm
Saturday 9 am – 5 pm
Sunday 2 – 7 pm

Fines are charged at the rate of 25 cents per item per day for overdue books and scores. Outstanding library fines may prevent a student from registering or from receiving a transcript. The loss of books and scores should be reported immediately to the library in order to prevent the accumulation of overdue fines. Charges for current replacement cost, plus a $25 service fee, are imposed for lost materials. No food or drink may be brought into the library.

Credit Courses

Courses for credit are designed in content and credit to parallel undergraduate courses offered in the Juilliard College Division. Although the Evening Division does not offer programs of study leading to a degree or diploma, students may request transfer of earned credits to an undergraduate program at Juilliard or elsewhere. Students receive a transcript with a letter grade at the end of each semester.

Auditions & Interviews

Auditions or placement interviews are required for specific courses, including voice and piano, music theory, musicianship, conducting, and composition. Students should schedule audition and interview appointments online at: juilliard.edu/eveningauditions. Please see individual course listings for specific audition and interview dates and requirements.

Returning students who wish to continue in a class the subsequent semester must register and pay the tuition and fees in full before the scheduled audition and interview dates. Spots are not held for returning students who miss the pre-registration deadline; openings are given to new students on the audition dates, and remaining spots are given to students on the waiting list, if applicable.
