THMUS 572E — Aspects of Neoclassicism

3 credits
Spring
Christina Lee

This course will explore analytical approaches to tonal works in the period surrounding the First and Second World Wars, roughly 1914 to 1945—an era which did not witness the death of tonality, but instead saw its extended cultivation in the many dialects of its idiosyncratic composers as they sought to revive the form and textures of the past. Through select pieces by Hindemith, Prokofiev, Stravinsky, Copland, and Germaine Tailleferre, this course will aim to unravel the inner workings of harmony and voice leading in this tonally diverse period.
