EVDOL 032 - The Tina Turner Story

Edward Barnes
Tina Turner, known as the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll, was one of the most successful and admired pop-rock artists in American history. A singer, songwriter, and actress, she rose from humble beginnings as the daughter of a Tennessee sharecropper to become one of the best-selling recording artists of all time, with more than 100 million records sold. This online lecture tracks Turner’s career and personal ups and downs, from her initial success with husband Ike on hits like “River Deep, Mountain High” (1966) and “Proud Mary” (1971); through her struggles to establish herself as a solo artist in the mid-70s, with appearances on The Hollywood Squares, The Brady Bunch, and the film version of the Who’s Tommy; to staging one of the greatest comebacks of all time with a stylistic evolution into international dance pop and the mega-hits “Private Dancer” (1983), “What’s Love Got To Do With It?” (1984), and “We Don’t Need Another Hero” (1985). The lecture examines Turner’s voice, her technical approach to singing, the musical elements of her style, and the business dealings that dealt her both financial blows and astronomical success.
