Richard Rodgers (Diploma 2024, music theory) and Lorenz Hart, better known as Rodgers and Hart, were one of the most iconic American songwriting teams in history. During a creative partnership spanning two decades (1920s-40s), they wrote more than 500 songs for Broadway and Hollywood musicals, including the hits “My Funny Valentine,” “Blue Moon,” “The Lady Is a Tramp,” and “Isn’t It Romantic.” This online lecture explores the lives and careers of these two extremely different men, whose talents as a team led them from the streets of Harlem to luxurious mansions in Beverly Hills, from vaudeville variety shows to the silver screen. This class is a look at what made a sometimes contentious partnership so successful, the creative techniques behind their music and lyrics, the ups and downs of their business dealings in the entertainment industry, and even their love affairs.
