EVDOL 023 - Brahms, A German Requiem Jonathan Yaeger Brahms’s Ein deutsches Requiem is one of the most beloved pieces in the classical repertory. What holds this piece together musically and textually? What is a “German Requiem,” anyway – is it sacred, secular, nationalistic – or somehow all of these at once? How did Brahms’s audiences react to the piece and how has its meaning changed over time in Europe, America, and beyond? We’ll answer all of these questions and more as we explore a piece that continues to entrance and fascinate listeners today.
