Following the format and spirit of last summer’s Stephen Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park With George, this seminar will take a deep dive into another masterly collaboration between Sondheim and James Lapine, Into the Woods. Like Sunday, Into the Woods is a radical redefinition of what musical theater can be, taking classic fairy tales as the starting point for a profound inquiry into the nature of families and communities, parents and children, love and marriage, separation and reconciliation. And the show doubles as an extraordinary meditation on storytelling and narrative, a play that has already reached its ending by the halfway point—and then it continues. All of this thematic richness is expressed in one of Sondheim’s most elaborate scores, a meticulously constructed tapestry of interrelated ideas, music of intellectual brilliance, and achingly human emotions. This course will attempt a complete tour of Sondheim’s and Lapine’s Woods, with marvels to be glimpsed at every stop along the way.
