EVDIV 234 - German Diction and Repertoire

Donna Gill
Embark on a captivating musical journey as we delve into the rich world of German repertoire, ranging from lieder composers such as Schubert, Schumann, Mendelssohn, and Wolf to the operatic masters Strauss, Wagner, and many others. In this course, we explore a vast spectrum of German music, beginning with early German songs preceding the explosion of 19th century lieder composition and then continuing to trace its development to the present day. Through this immersive experience, you will acquire essential skills in German phonetics (IPA) and witness how these songs come to life in the genre of German repertoire that resonates with you.

Our classes are structured to provide a comprehensive understanding of the phonetic structure of the German language as it applies to our chosen songs and arias. The first part of each class is dedicated to exploring the intricacies of German pronunciation, equipping each student with a solid foundation in vocalizing German texts. By mastering these skills, you will gain confidence in interpreting and conveying the true essence of the German language in your performances.

The second part of each class will be an interactive master class-style open coaching session. This format allows ample time for each student to work on their selected songs and arias, with valuable feedback and constructive commentary provided by both peers and instructors. Through this collaborative approach, you will refine your vocal technique, interpretation, and artistic expression, elevating your musical abilities to new heights.
