EVDIV 161 — Introduction to Conducting

Mark Shapiro
Although the act of conducting is essentially the art of the situation, beginning conductors are well-advised to acquire mechanical fundamentals. This yearlong course establishes a tool kit of handy technical basics to meet some of the many challenges that inevitably emerge as a conductor seeks to start, pause, stop, and manage the musical flow. It also lays a solid foundation for future study, reflection, or practice associated with any conducting environment: orchestral, choral, opera, classical, contemporary, musical theater, or worship. Each semester, students have several opportunities to conduct small ensembles (such as a string quintet) drawn from the Juilliard community. Placement interview required.

13 weeks per semester
Tuesdays 6:30 – 8 pm
