EVCRT 411 — Music Theory and Analysis IV: At Tonality’s Edge
This course examines later 19th- and early 20th-century trends that contributed to the breakdown of traditional tonality around 1900, and the ensuing rise of new tonalities. An ongoing theme in this course is developing a working definition of “tonality” and the tension between harmonic and contrapuntal aspects of music. Placement interview required.
