EVDOL 071 — The Verdi Baritone

John J.H. Muller
This class focuses on the vocal qualities associated with Verdi’s baritone roles (and, by extension, those of other Italian composers). These include a ringing upper register, comfort in a high tessitura, excellent legato, control over a wide dynamic range, and a vibrant yet warm and dark timbre. The Verdi baritone must also possess the dramatic ability to portray fathers, best friends, and villains. We review extensive recorded examples of great Italian and American interpreters from the beginning of the 20th century to the recent past, including Tita Ruffo, Giuseppe de Lucca, Tito Gobbi, Piero Cappucilli, Lawrence Tibbett, Leonard Warren, Robert Merrill, and Sherrill Milnes.
