EVDOL 014 — Understanding Jazz

Matthew Rybicki
Often described as the quintessential American art form, jazz is a complex musical genre. It can be challenging for nonmusicians to follow an improvised solo or to distinguish the different sounds of jazz. In this course, we review not only the major figures—such as Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker, and John Coltrane—but also the basic concepts and vocabulary of jazz. Through frequent use of recordings and in-class discussion, students learn to “listen better” and gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of this unique art form.
