This class examines American literature after 1945 from a variety of critical perspectives. Possible topics include: Postmodern literature and culture; American literature and social revolution; American literature and the post-Colonial condition; the Beat movement; the Black Arts movement; the literature of witness; poetry as performance; gender, sexuality, and literature; literature and critical theories of race; the literature of immigration; literature and the environment; the literature of New York City; religion, spirituality, and American literature; literature and contemporary film; folklore and literature; the graphic novel; the New Journalism; and digital literature.
