What is a family? What constitutes marriage? These are among the most hotly debated questions in contemporary society. This course explores marriage and the family as dynamic institutions at the intersections of law, sexuality, and morality. We will examine the religious, social, and legal ideologies and practices that have framed marriage and family life from ancient times to the present. Course materials will include historical readings, literary sources, and film.
