These yearlong courses cover the wide range of techniques and expertise necessary for effective conducting: score study and musical decision-making; basic patterns and gestures with or without a baton; knowledge of the instrument groups and their requirements (such as bowing for strings); and strategic communication with musicians in rehearsal and performance. Introduction to Conducting is designed for those with little or no prior conducting experience, and Instrumental Conducting and Choral Conducting are more advanced, credit-level classes for more experienced conductors. All courses require basic music literacy. Not subject to N.Y. Philharmonic discount
Placement interviews are required to place students in the proper level course. Interested students will need to complete a questionnaire before scheduling an interview. Please contact the Evening Division for more information.
